Sometimes your body wakes you up in the middle of the night with a message. At 57 years old and post-menopausal, I’ve learned to listen.
The Wake-Up Call
I’d gone to bed at 8 PM, but insomnia had other plans. At 1 AM, I woke up and channeled that restless energy into cleaning my kitchen counters until 4 AM. Finally exhausted, I went back to sleep. An hour later, at 5 AM, breast tenderness pulled me awake again.
At first, I thought maybe I’d strained a muscle during all that cleaning—moving things around, reorganizing, doing the physical work that comes with downsizing. A pulled pectoral muscle wouldn’t surprise me.
Trust, But Verify
I performed a thorough breast exam on both sides. I found lumpiness, but the lumps moved freely—a good sign. Nothing fixed or alarming. But here’s what made me pause: the tenderness wasn’t just on one side. Both breasts felt the same way.
That’s when I knew this wasn’t a muscle strain.
Post-menopausal breast tenderness in both breasts at the same time? That pointed to something systemic—likely hormonal. And given my thyroid history, I wasn’t surprised. Thyroid dysfunction affects everything, including breast tissue sensitivity.
The Solution I Trust
I didn’t panic. I didn’t lie awake worrying. I reached for my organic frankincense oil—the same bottle that’s helped me before.
Me and frankincense oil? We have history.
Years ago, I developed a ganglion cyst on the left side of my right knee. Painful. Swollen. Annoying as hell. I applied frankincense oil topically, massaging it in over several applications. The cyst shrunk. The pain disappeared. The swelling went down.
So when my breasts felt tender at 5 AM, I didn’t hesitate.
I applied a few drops to each breast and massaged it in gently. Within minutes, the tenderness eased. My body relaxed. I went back to sleep.
Why Frankincense Works
Frankincense oil (derived from Boswellia serrata) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and natural pain reliever. It works by reducing inflammation at the cellular level—which is exactly what I needed for hormonally-triggered breast tenderness.
The research backs this up:
Studies on Boswellia extract show it can reduce inflammation, affect breast density, and even influence tumor cells in research settings. While most evidence for topical frankincense oil comes from traditional use and smaller studies, my personal experience over 30+ years tells me it works.
The Lesson Here
I’m not a doctor. I’m a Licensed Practical Nurse with 17+ years of clinical experience and 30+ years of personal supplement experimentation. I know my body. I trust my instincts. And I have a track record with frankincense oil that gives me confidence.
If you experience unexplained breast tenderness or find any lumps—especially lumps that don’t move—see a healthcare professional immediately. Always.
But if you’re dealing with hormonal breast tenderness, inflammatory conditions, or minor cysts? Frankincense oil might become your trusted ally too.
How I Use Frankincense Oil for Breast Tenderness
• I use organic frankincense essential oil
• I apply 3-4 drops directly to each breast (some sources recommend diluting with a carrier oil—I apply it neat because I know my skin tolerates it well)
• I massage it in gently using circular motions
• I let it absorb fully before going back to bed
• Relief usually comes within 10-15 minutes
Important Safety Notes
• Always do a patch test first if you’ve never used frankincense oil topically
• Most experts recommend diluting essential oils with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, or almond oil) to prevent skin irritation
• If you have sensitive skin, start diluted
• Never ignore persistent or severe breast pain—see a doctor
• If you find any lumps that don’t move freely, get them checked immediately
The Bigger Picture
This is what healthcare looks like when you’ve spent decades learning your body’s language. You don’t panic at every symptom. You assess. You remember what’s worked before. You apply what you know. And you trust your experience.
Frankincense oil has earned its place in my wellness toolkit. It’s been there for my knee. It’s been there for my breasts. It’ll be there the next time my body sends me a 5 AM message.
Because when you’ve got history with something that works? You don’t hesitate. You just reach for the bottle and let it do what it’s always done.
Stay well,Linda Beauty Marks
